ADDENDUM
TO THE GUIDELINES, Definition of a PRINT taken from the
The Nova Scotia Printmakers
Association’s (NSPA) guidelines for prints recognizes the important role of
the artist in creating or inventing an image for print and in subsequent
printing processes.
NSPA’s “Classification Of Prints”
(COP) allows for growth of print art through new technologies and materials. A
print’s classification should be clearly marked on the NSPA’s “Print
Certificate” or similar documentation that should accompany any prints
produced or purchased in the region.
The artist alone created the matrix and
printed same- dimension impressions from it. Prints in this category imply an
artist’s total and singular involvement.
CATEGORY
B
The artist, with assistance from a
collaborator(s), created print matrix and same-dimension impressions from it.
CATEGORY
C
The artist, with or without
collaboration, created a print matrix using processes or technologies not
relative to dimensions or number of subsequent prints.
CATEGORY
D
The artist supervised and authorized all
collaboration and technology in preparation of a print matrix and subsequent
impressions, with all labor provided by others.
CATEGORY
E
A print made from a pre-existing image
with or without the artist’s permission or involvement, often in a different
medium or size than the original (often called reproductions, facsimiles or
posters).
PRINT
The impression of an image made by the
transfer from one surface to another.
EDITION
Total impressions of an image, after the
artist’s approval, not necessarily limited in number.
MATRIX
The material from which an impression is
to be printed from (often called a plate)
Traditional plate materials include wood.
Stone, metal; screen mesh, plexi -glass, or collaged materials such as paper or
fabric. Matrices can also be generated by electronic, photo mechanical or
computer systems and only differ from the traditional plates in that dimensions
of impressions can be easily altered or varied within an edition.
COLLABORATOR(S)
Any person assisting the artist with
expertise in making a matrix or printing.
REPRODUCTION
/ FACSIMILE
A copy of an original work of art or a
pre-existing image (i.e. painting,
Print, sculpture, etc.) often by means of
technologies or processes different than those used to create the original
matrix or art work.
